Note: There are Avengers: Endgame spoilers in the following article.
Much more thought went into bringing back the superheroes from the Snap (err… Blip) in Avengers: Endgame than you may have first thought.
One of the most exciting sequences in the film comes during the climactic battle between the Avengers and past-Thanos’s allies, when all of the heroes who had previously been snapped away re-materialize and join the battle.
The first to arrive through a portal in Wakanda is Black Panther (Chadwick Boseman) with Shuri (Letitia Wright) and Okoye (Danai Gurira), after Falcon (Sam Wilson) makes audio contact with Captain America (Chris Evans) to assure him he’s watching Cap’s back.
In their Reddit AMA last week, Avengers: Endgame directors Anthony and Joe Russo explained that this sequence in the film was one of the most difficult to edit.
“We spent a lot of time in the edit room playing around with the sequencing of the portal,” Joe wrote. “We probably didn’t lock that section of the movie until about a month before the film was in theaters.
“We always wanted Sam to be the first one to communicate with Cap via his comm and Sam was last in Wakanda, so logically the first portal that would open would be the Wakandan portal. And the first person that would logically walk through a portal from Wakanda would be the king himself, bringing his army once again to the defence of Cap and the world.”
That makes sense! Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige also touched on the editing process for the heroes’ return last week, admitting that the original version had to be changed because it was too confusing.
The Russos’ AMA proved to be a wealth of information for Avengers fans, as they teased additional Easter eggs, explained a surprise cameo and addressed popular fan theories.
