Endgame directors talk Captain America time travel theory

Note: The following article contains Avengers: Endgame spoilers in case you’ve still not seen it.

One of the most emotional moments in Avengers: Endgame comes at the very end of the movie… and no, we’re not talking about that funeral.

After the Avengers say goodbye to Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr), and Captain America (Chris Evans) uses Pym Particles to travel back in time to restore the Infinity Stones to their rightful places, Bucky (Sebastian Stan) and Sam (Anthony Mackie) are surprised to find an elderly Cap waiting for them on a park bench.

Old Man Cap is portrayed by Sleepy Hollow star Patrick Gorman, as he passes off his shield to Sam. In their chat, Old Man Cap is pretty evasive about how he’d made it back to the present day.

This closing moment is unquestionably emotional, but it has also been criticized as nonsensical too. Luckily, we now have an official explanation courtesy of directors Anthony and Joe Russo.

During a Reddit AMA on Wednesday (August 7), one fan asked them if Old Man Cap had re-used the Quantum Suit to get back to the present once again.

“You are correct in that he would have had to have worn the quantum suit, using a Pym Particle to make the jump,” the Russos answered.

“He’s not wearing the suit on the bench, because that is not the exact moment to which he returned.”

There’s your answer–whether it makes complete sense or not!

Earlier this week, co-writer Christopher Markus also lent credence to a fan theory that time travel effectively created two Captain Americas in the main MCU timeline.

Avengers: Endgame is available to pre-order on DVD, Blu-ray, 3D and 4K now.
